Most shower problems come down to four things. Here's how to tell which one you've got — and when to stop fiddling and ring a plumber.
On an electric shower, cold water usually means the heater element or thermal cut-out has failed. If the unit is more than eight years old it's normally cheaper to replace it than repair it — a like-for-like swap is often done in one visit.
Start with the head: limescale blocks the holes. If a clean head doesn't fix it, the problem is the hose, the inlet filter, or a partially closed isolating valve. Persistent low flow across the house points to the mains — see our water mains page.
Almost always the tray seal, the waste trap or a hidden joint — not the shower unit itself. Stop using the shower and get it looked at before the ceiling stains spread.
On a mixer shower this is the thermostatic cartridge. They're replaceable, but the right part matters — send us a photo of the valve.
